{"id":112,"date":"2021-03-31T21:47:17","date_gmt":"2021-03-31T21:47:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stmaryswyo.com\/?page_id=112"},"modified":"2024-03-06T16:55:36","modified_gmt":"2024-03-06T16:55:36","slug":"history","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/stmaryswyo.org\/index.php\/history\/","title":{"rendered":"History"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>1884-1891<\/strong> &#8211; St. John the Baptist School, West 21<sup>st<\/sup> Street and O\u2019Neil Avenue<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1886-1933<\/strong> &#8211; Academy of the Holy Child of Jesus, East 24<sup>th<\/sup> Street and Central Avenue (Sister of the Holy Child of Jesus staff school)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1933-1952<\/strong> &#8211; St Mary\u2019s Academy (Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa, Wisconsin begin staffing school)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1938 <\/strong>\u2013 New and seperate building for the high school constructed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1952<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 New grade school building constructed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1952 <\/strong>\u2013 Name changed to St.&nbsp;Mary\u2019s School<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1981<\/strong> &#8211; St. Mary\u2019s Catholic High School closes and reopens as Seton Catholic High School (Dominican Sisters cease staffing the school)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1991<\/strong>\u2013 Seton Catholic High School closes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2004<\/strong> \u2013 St. Mary\u2019s School Foundation established<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2009<\/strong> \u2013 New St.\u00a0Mary\u2019s Catholic School built, West 22<sup>nd<\/sup> Street and on O\u2019Neil Avenue<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2021<\/strong> \u2013 School Bond paid off<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Memories from the Decades<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1930\u2019s<\/strong>&nbsp;Saw the change from St. Mary\u2019s Academy to St. Mary\u2019s High School. The mascot was originally called \u201cBronco\u2019s\u201d but in 1934 \u201cGales\u201d became the permanent name; named after a team from St. Mary\u2019s in California, recalls Betty Schroll Class of 1938.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1940\u2019s<\/strong>&nbsp;First radio broadcast of a football game by Curt Gowdy between St. Marys and Pine Bluffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1942<\/strong>&nbsp;The New St. Mary\u2019s High School opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1950\u2019s \u2013 Aug 31, 1952<\/strong>&nbsp;Bishop Newell dedicated the new facilities, built to accommodate 1,000 students. Tearing down of old Holy Child Academy building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1960\u2019s<\/strong>&nbsp;Dedication of the high school chapel in 1960 and gymnasium in 1964. Possibly the largest class to graduate from St. Mary\u2019s High School was the class of 1968 with 88 students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1970\u2019s<\/strong>&nbsp;Football State Champions with a record of 10-0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1980\u2019s \u2013 1981<\/strong> said goodbye to the Dominican Sisters and saw the close of St. Mary\u2019s High School. Later that year, Seton High School, a tri-parish high school was established. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1990\u2019s<\/strong> \u2013 Seton Catholic High School closed in 1991.
