1st Grade Curriculumn

Overview: Language development is integral in the formation of a well-rounded elementary school student. Daily, multiple opportunities will be afforded every elementary student in the area of Language Arts. All students will be engaged in meaningful student led conversation.

First Grade Reading

Students Will Develop:

  • Phonemic awareness and sound/symbol relationships.
  • A strong sight word vocabulary.
  • A meaningful vocabulary.
  • An awareness and basic knowledge of punctuation (comma, period, question mark, exclamation mark).
  • Reading with fluency.
  • Reading to obtain information.
  • Ability to separate main idea from detail and fact from fiction.
  • Ability to identify parts of a story, beginning, middle and end.
  • Ability to identify characters, plot and setting from a story.

First Grade Writing, Students Will:

  • Use print as a tool for communication in a variety of ways and for a variety of purposes.
  • Use grammar organizers, webbing, sentence starters and brainstorming to develop ideas for writing.
  • Learn phonics patterns to grow toward standard spelling.
  • Use student dictionaries for practice when learning to spell.
  • Keep a daily journal.
  • Work in handwriting book to learn letter formation and spacing rules.
  • Develop basic editing skills to help with story writing.

Math

First Grade Basic Operations:

  • Addition and Subtraction with 1 and 2 digit numbers.
  • Addition of three 1 digit numbers.
  • Understanding less than, equal to and more than.
  • Develop an awareness of the relationship between numbers (fact families).
  • Identify “one more” and “one less”, “ten more” and “ten less”.
  • Solve addition equations with a missing addend.

First Grade Number Patterns:

  • Skip count by 2, 5, 10, and 100.
  • Understand a number line and how it is used.
  • Identify even and odd numbers.
  • Understand how numbers are broken down into hundreds, tens, and ones.
  • Be able to use and count with tally marks.
  • Understand how a calendar is used to mark days and months.

First Grade Geometry:

  • Recognize plane and solid shapes.
  • Classify shapes based on attributes.
  • Recognize an object that is symmetrical.
  • Recognize an object that has been divided equally into halves, thirds and fourths.

First Grade Time, Measurement and Money:

  • Tell time to the hour and half hour.
  • Order a series of pictured events.
  • Identify each coin in a mixed group and count them.
  • Practice measuring length by inch and centimeter.
  • Practice using a cup, quart and liter.
  • Learn the difference between a kilogram and a liter.

Religion

Overview: In first grade religion, students will gain a basic understanding of one true God and understand His love for us. The students will recognize Jesus and learn about His life and teachings. Students will become familiar with the three persons of the Holy Trinity, recognize Mary as the Mother of God and associate life after death with Heaven. Students will have a basic understanding and awareness of the Catholic Mass, God and creation and prayer. Prayers said daily may include:

  • Glory Be
  • Hail Mary
  • Our Father

Children will attend weekly Mass. Through the current religion workbook, Christ Our Life, students will be exposed to the following content, scope and sequence: creed, worship, sacraments, morality and Christian prayer. The various liturgical seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter are also part of the Christ Our Life series.

First Grade Religion, Exploring God’s Love in Our World and His Presence in Our Lives, the Student Will:

  • Grow as God’s child.
  • Understand that each one of us is unique and special.
  • Discuss and understand feelings.
  • Explore the five senses that God gave us.
  • Demonstrate love for others.
  • Establish friendships.
  • Celebrate family.

First Grade Religion, God Created Our Wonderful World, the Student Will:

  • Become aware that God created animals and all living creatures.
  • Discuss God’s gift to our world, Jesus, during Advent, as we celebrate His birth at Christmas.
  • Identify the Holy Family.
  • Learn that Easter is a joyous celebration of new life (Lent).
  • Remember and provide for those less fortunate.

First Grade Religion, Growing in Our Faith, the Student:

  • Can pray.
  • Develops an awareness of how we pray (sign of the cross)
  • Understands that God listens to our prayers.
  • Gives thanks to God for many blessings.
  • Practices reciting the Our Father.
  • Practices reciting the Hail Mary.
  • Practices saying Grace before meals.
  • Experiences and learns about faith-filled people.
  • Reads and discusses the lives of Saint Patrick and Saint Valentine.
  • Reads and discusses Bible stories.
  • Celebrates Catholic Schools Week.

Social Studies

First Grade Social Studies, Students Will:

  • Be able to locate Wyoming on a map of the U.S.
  • Find the U.S. on a world map and on a globe.
  • Understand the meaning of major patriotic symbols.
  • Point out North, South, West, and East on a map.
  • Know the difference between rural, urban and suburban parts of the city.
  • Learn the difference between a city, state and country, and learn the names of their own.
  • Learn dates of major holidays and know the reason for each.
  • Discover different countries have different ways of living, worshipping and celebrating.
  • Know the difference between a “need” and a “want” and know how needs are acquired.
  • Learn all action has consequences.
  • Explore Native American lifestyles.
  • Study American Presidents and leaders.

Science

First Grade Science, the Student Will:

  • Study different animal habitats and describe common components of these habitats.
  • Be introduced to camouflage as well as other adaptations of animals.
  • Study the lifecycle of various insects and discover the differences between simple and complete metamorphosis.
  • Study plants and seeds and conduct various experiments to find out optimal conditions for growing plants.
  • Study color and light and discover the similarities and differences between them, including learning how shadows are made.
  • Learn ways to keep our environment clean and healthy.
  • Learn about recycling and reusing materials.

First Grade Science, the Student Will Study These Units:

  • Life Science – Plants and Animals
  • Human Body – The Senses
  • Earth Science – The Weather
  • Physical Science – Balance and Motion

Music

Overview: The St. Mary’s School Music Curriculum is standard for all grade levels. These standards are to be included as part of the teaching process in elementary general music and middle school music to accomplish the assessment of the five competencies in musical skills. They are aligned with both the national and statewide standards.

First Grade Music, the Student Will:

  • Sing or play on instruments a varied repertoire of music. This includes appropriate technique, accurate pitches and rhythms with the proper range and degree of difficulty.
  • Create music.
  • Read and notate music. The includes reading, identifying and executing rhythms, melodies and expressive qualities with very easy literature in regards to key, meter, rhythm and range.
  • Listen to, analyze, evaluate and describe music used in the classroom.
  • Relate music to various historical and cultural traditions.

First Grade Music, the Student Will:

  • Become more beatful, tuneful and artful, by following the 12 steps of Music Literacy designed by Dr. John M. Feierabend.
    1. Readiness rote Song Songs and rhymes are learned by rote that will contain rhythm and/or tonal content to be studied later.
    2. Conversation Solfege Rote where students bond rhythm and tonal patterns with aural labels.
    3. Decode – Familiar which requires aural recall and decoding of songs and rhymes presented by rote at the Readiness stage.
    4. Decode – Unfamiliar.
    5. Create – Think original musical thoughts.
    6. Reading Rote – Introduction to notation symbols.
    7. Reading Decode – Familiar.
    8. Reading Decode – Unfamiliar.
    9. Writing Rote – Learn to write notation.
    10. Writing Decode – Familiar.
    11. Writing Decode – Unfamiliar.
    12. Writing Create or Composition.
  • Be introduced to hymns and repertoire of the Catholic Church to be sung at prayer service and weekly Thursday Mass.
  • Perform at least one concert per year.

Physical Education

First Grade Physical Education, the Student Will:

  • Review locomotor and non-locomotor skills.
  • Continue manipulative and cooperative games.
  • Learn life skills through stretch, strength and healthy choices.
  • Develop jump rope skills and tricks.
  • Utilize parachute exercises.
  • Explore the hula-hoop.
  • Develop listening skills.
  • Use appropriate body and object control.

Art

At St. Mary’s Catholic School, we strive to create an artistic atmosphere where students gain confidence and creativity through hands-on experience.  We offer a variety of artistic media to inspire our students. We encouraging them to explore their imagination and use math and reading skills in their projects.

First Grade students are introduced to the general principles of the color wheel, exploring emotions in the use of color and portrait making, becoming aware of positive and negative space, learning techniques with various types of clay.
